Invisible Cities: Argia Development with Colour

I took a while to play around with the colour, adding and taking away rock structures and playing around with the lighting. It's not technically finished but I don't want to spend too long working on this, I'd rather put my energy into doing some studies of rocks and exploring other ways of making the actual architecture. I tried to make it look gloomy vs whimsical but I'm unsure which direction it went it, so feedback is welcome.

  1. I like it, it has a nice atmosphere about it. I just think that it is a bit bare for a city. That being said, I love the glowing things hanging from the ceiling, they fit in perfectly.

    Perhaps you could try adding tiers, to make it feel more vast. Like this for example: http://vignette2.wikia.nocookie.net/gurennlagann/images/4/44/Jeeha_Village.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20120511023516
    Maybe that doesn't work with the description of Argia, so if it doesn't then ignore that suggestion :)

    1. I agree, there was meant to be WAY structures that were actual buildings but I didn't want to spend ages on this one/make it super precious just yet so I figured it'd be best to just stop, get feedback then continue to develop it.

  2. The lighting is evocative; this place feels terribly sinister! In terms of lighting and colour, I'd be tempted to up the orange factor and up the blue factor, so you really bring those two colours together dramatically - so even more expressionistic. I'd like to see you think about varying your brushes too, as there's a ubiquitous 'softness' here - everything is softened, and merged and blended - finding ways to diversify surfaces and specularity is a challenge with Argia, as arguably everything is made from the same stuff!

    So - main point - think much more expressionistically about your lighting - this is concept art for animation, so you can really dial things up - especially as you've got the 'blue' glowworm idea in the mix - I think you could push everything much more so: some examples of 'Disney' boldness to give you boldness:

    electric blue glow / fire-orange rim lighting = 'pow!'

    You could be really brave, and begin working with blue and orange as your base colours and really cut loose!

    1. Thanks for the suggestions! I'll give it a try, maybe for my rock studies I'll try using blue and orange instead of the colours in the photos so I can practice. Thank you for the links too...very helpful!
